Technology Loaner Program

Information Technology (I.T.) has laptops, Mi-Fi internet devices, headsets with microphones, webcams, and software-in-the-cloud services to ensure faculty, students, and staff are able to remotely teach, learn, and work.

Individuals may reserve the devices they need online. Once the devices are prepped and ready for pick-up, users are invited to come to a designated drive through campus parking area. Users remain safely in their vehicles and the I.T. team delivers the devices to users in their vehicles wearing protective mask and gloves, following campus safety guidelines. I.T. is committed to ensuring the safety of our employees and those they serve. To reserve a laptop, webcam or a microphone, visit the Technology Loaner Program website. Users may also call 310-243-2500, with questions.

Information Technology is also working to make the Toro Computer Lab virtually available to students. Students who need access to a specialized computer program or do not have access to a computer or internet service at home, will be able to complete their coursework remotely using Toro Virtual Lab. I.T. will continue this and other similar programs to protect the health and safety of all. For continued technological support and with the permission of the users, I.T. can also connect to user computers remotely to troubleshoot, if needed.

Toro Virtual Lab

An exciting new tool is now available to all students: Toro Virtual Lab. This tool will allow you to have a virtual Windows 10 computer from your desktop so that you can access course software from anywhere. And the best part is that you can access the Toro Virtual Lab from any computer to have a more robust technology experience.

There are three ways to begin a Toro Virtual Lab session:

  1. Web browser
  2. MyCSUDH
  3. Torolab App

Be Secure

I.T. has created a website full of information regarding security measures, remote access, software, and more. Visit the Be Secure site for the complete list of resources.

Setting up Your Home for Remote Study and Work

Each section below provides information about how to equip your home for studying or working remotely. There are also links to the I.T. Knowledge Base, where you may find other valuable resources.

  • How can I get Internet access?

If you do not have access to the Internet from off-campus, please contact the service-provider in your area for more information.

    Comcast, Charter/Spectrum, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile

The City of Los Angeles has compiled options for low-cost Internet services, searchable by zip code.

Similarly, the City of Long Beach has a website dedicated to digital inclusion community resources.

  • How do I connect to my campus computer remotely?

    1. Determine whether you need to connect to your campus computer remotely. Most of the software and services that you use daily, while on campus, are cloud-based and do not need VPN; you can use your internet connection and log in to the service using your campus username and password. For a listing of commonly used apps, see Applications That Need A Virtual Private Network (VPN) While Working Remotely
    2. If you determine you need VPN to use a particular resource, you will need to install Duo for multi-factor authentication on a device of your choice (to verify who you are) and GlobalProtect (to give you the tunnel into the campus network.)

  • Additional Remote Resources

  • Office Phone/Voicemail

Clearspan Communicator is a softphone/software app that allows CSUDH employees to use their office phone on a remote device. Send and receive office calls on a device of your choice (mobile phone, desktop, laptop, or tablet) using the Communicator.

  • Online Meetings, Collaboration and Chat (Zoom)

Zoom provides audio and audio/video conferencing with screen-sharing and text chat features, especially for small and large groups. Schedule and host meetings. You can also use the Zoom app to make calls (contact must have a CSUDH email.) Zoom also offers a comprehensive FAQ page.

You may also choose a CSUDH campus image to use as your Zoom background.

  • Securing Zoom Meetings

It is important to consider the security implications of the Zoom meetings that you set up. Participants may share sensitive data and if you are recording the meetings, the data will be stored. Preventing uninvited guests from joining and sharing the recording via Dropbox will help keep your meeting secure.

Starting September 27, 2020, Zoom will require that all meetings have a Passcode or Waiting Room enabled. More details are available on the Zoom Help Center.

  • Zoom Cloud Recordings

Zoom recordings are now automatically available for faculty on the TechSmith Knowmia Video Library. Users can edit and manage recordings at csudh.techsmithrelay.com. You can also learn more about how to share recordings on the Academic Technology website.

Contact IT Service Now for additional assistance.

  • Get Support

User Access Services is the central point of contact for all technology-related support. IT support requests are tracked and reviewed centrally via ServiceNow. If you need support, please open a ticket or call 310-243-2500, Option 1.

  • IT Scheduled Maintenance and System Status

IT conducts routine maintenance on its programs at scheduled times, shown on the System Status website. During maintenance some programs may not be available.

  • I.T. Training for Faculty and Staff

I.T. Training has launched a comprehensive training program, designed to offer maximum flexibility for learners, covering many of the tools in the I.T. Toolkit, (i.e. Outlook, Zoom Chat, Dropbox, etc.), and focused on Business as Usual in a Virtual World.

  • Independent/Remote Learning

I.T. has curated a collection of self-paced resources for those who prefer independent learning. These collections range from short in-house videos (I.T. Training YouTube videos coming soon), and quick guides from our Service Portal to full-length videos and collections from LinkedIn Learning (requires CSUDH username/password and activation).

  • Software Applications

  • Do I need a virtual private network (VPN) to access my commonly used applications?

Only a few resources that CSUDH uses need to have a VPN connection. Please see Connecting Remotely (below) for information and detailed instructions on how to setup your VPN.

If you need help with a VPN connection or if the application you use is not listed below and you are unsure if it needs to have a VPN, please open a HelpDesk ticket.
