I use Excel 2007 & I'm unable to add a network drive as my Trusted Location. Even my IT Administrators are unable to assist me. I had the same problem. It depends on how the network drives were connected. First I had used the IP, like this: 192.168.178.24 public. Not trustworthy. If the trusted path download succeeds, the driver is installed on behalf of any user. If the trusted path download fails, the driver is not installed and the network printer is not added. Although it might be appropriate in some organizations to allow users to install printer drivers on their own workstations, this is not suitable for servers.

Learning has never been so easy!

If some print drivers are being installed automatically but others aren't then read on.

Despite having being allowed to install Print drivers in the GPO, If the print driver is not a 'certified trusted package-aware' then it will not be installed automatically and will prompt the user each time on login to install the driver.

Check the Driver name on the Servers - Print Management to see if the 'Packaged' field is 'true' or 'false' if false and you cannot download a trusted, package-aware print drivers from the printer manufacturer then the following edit in the registry may resolve the issue.

6 Steps total

Step 1: Identify the Print Server and Driver to be updated

In the 'Do you trust this printer message' the name of the Print Server and Print driver should be noted.

Step 2: Find the relevent Printer Name

On the Print Server

Type NET SHARE at the command prompt and note the Printer Share name and note the corresponding Print Queue name

Step 3: Print Management Check

Check the Driver name on the Servers - Print Management if the 'Packaged' field is 'true' then do not proceed with the edit and check that your GPO is set correctly.

If false and you cannot download a trusted, package-aware print drivers from the printer manufacturer then note in the Print Management Program - Printers Servers - Printers - the Print Name and Driver Type eg 'Type 3 - User Mode'.

Step 4: Backup and navigate the Registry

For 64-bit drivers: HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetControlPrintEnviromentsWindowsx64DriversVersion-X{Driver Name}
For 32-bit drivers: HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetControlPrintEnviromentsWindows NT x86DriversVersion-X{Driver Name}

'X' is the print driver 'Type', usually either '3' or '4'

Step 5: Edit the PrinterDriverAttributes REG_DWORD

Edit the relevant key named 'PrinterDriverAttributes' by adding 1 to whatever value is currently set.
(Example: if the current value is '0', change it to '1'. and it should be an odd number)

Exit the Registry and check your settings by restarting the Print Spooler and the Print Management Program and check the 'Packaged' field is now 'true'

Step 6: Login and check

If your Group Policy settings are configured correctly then the printer driver should install automatically.
